The 508 and 510 are electronically identical to the 501 with the difference being the capacity of the hard drive.

DVR usage is free on the 501 and 508 (also 721) but new DVRs starting with the 510 are hit with a $4.98/month fee, since raised to $5.98/mo. The fee is waived for those with America's Everything Pack Programming.
